James West worked with another inventor named Gerhard Sessler to create a special kind of microphone called an electret microphone. This microphone was a big deal because it was smaller, lighter, cheaper, and worked better than most microphones at the time.
Today, electret microphones are used in many things we use every day, like smartphones, laptops, music equipment, and hearing aids. In fact, the National Inventors Hall of Fame says that about 9 out of 10 microphones today are electret microphones!
Because of this amazing invention, James West was honored and added to the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1999. 🎉

Ida B. Wells-Barnett was a brave journalist who used her writing to stand up for African Americans in the South long ago. She wrote about unfair and harmful treatment to help people understand what was really happening. Because of this, she had to move to Chicago to stay safe. There, she kept working to make life fairer for women and Black Americans and helped start a group that supported and empowered Black women.

Katherine Johnson was very good at math even when she was a little girl. She loved numbers and worked hard to learn more every day. In 1958, she started an amazing career at NASA, where she helped scientists and astronauts explore space.
Katherine's math skills were so amazing that many NASA engineers trusted her to check important space calculations by hand. One astronaut, John Glenn, trusted her work so much that he said he wouldn’t fly into space until Katherine said the numbers were right.
In 2015, Katherine Johnson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of the highest awards in the United States, to honor her incredible achievements.

Mary Jackson was NASA’s first Black female engineer. She was very smart and worked hard for many years, writing reports and helping scientists learn more about flying and space.
Later, Mary chose a new job so she could help others. She worked to make sure women had more chances to get hired and succeed at NASA. She also cared deeply about people and spent much of her life mentoring kids, volunteering, and helping her community.
Thank you for opening doors for future scientists!
